Superman The Movie Director Richard Donner Leaves a Heroic Mark by Scott Cranford
I was 12 when Superman the movie came out. I couldn't wait to see it. I still remember how inspired I felt when I left the theater in East Hartford, Connecticut. It became my favorite movie and still is. Richard Donner/ Christopher Reeve Superman delivered a Superman that was earnest noble and forthright.
Years later when I started playing Superman professionally, it was the Reeve Superman, influenced by Donner that got me through the most difficult situations.
In 1998 I was working on Lethal Weapon 4. I approached Richard Donner at the craft service table and told him Superman was my favorite movie and I was hoping he’d be directing the then upcoming Superman movie. He told me he wanted to but they wouldn’t let him. I thought those guys must be crazy. This guy made the greatest superhero movie of all time. He then generously featured me a scene with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover.

I was grateful to have worked with him and that I was able to tell him how much Superman meant to me. I ran into Richard Donner at Superman related events and he always recognized me and was friendly. That meant the world to me!
The legendary director not only made people believe a man could fly but he also made people believe a a good guy could be cool. Heroic thanks to Richard Donner for bringing Superman to life for so many heroic enthusiasts. His moralistic hero set a bar for every superhero movie to come that has still not been reached. - Scott Cranford
