Heroic Archetypes HeroicWorld takes an in-depth look at the the origin of super heroes and what inspired their creation throughout the history of comic books and super-entertainment. With the continuity of how the myth of the modern super-hero came to be and how it has been duplicated time and time again, this duplication becomes so pervasive that the characters become archetypal. WINGED-HERO-TYPESThere
have also been a number of "winged" heroes created over the
decades. The inspiration probably came first from real-life belief in
angels and birds.
UNDERWATER HERO-TYPESHeroes that breathe underwater are also popular. Once again, creators borrowed from nature using creatures of the sea. These types of characters also owe their inspiration to the myths of Neptune, mermaids and the legend of Atlantis.
SIZE-CHANGER-TYPESPeople have always been fond of characters who are either very small or very large. This fascination probably began with the real-life births of dwarves which eventually lead to the legends of elves, pixies and leprechauns. The stories of giants probably began with the stories in the Bible of giants such as Goliath and the Sons of Anak. Below are examples of how size-changing characters have been used. Shrinking men

Giant MenHere are some heroes that grow to gigantic sizes.
Giant womenThis archetype probably started with the old Norse myths of giantesses, but the most famous one of all was seen on the silver screen.
And as you can see, it umm...GREW from there!
MALE ASSASSIN-TYPESThere was also a trend of making heroes out of characters that are traditionally bad...the assassin.
VIGILANTE HEROIC-TYPESOf course, it can be argued that all heroes are vigilantes in some shape, form or fashion, but some are particularly violent and use guns.
ACROBATIC HEROESThese archetypes, probably based on the circus acrobats, have had special place in comic lore.
ARCHER-TYPESArcher characters like Robin Hood and William Tell have also been instrumental by inspiring heroes.

MALE CAT-HERO-TYPESHeroes are also named after animals. Batman may have been the first, but there where several who specifically used the CAT as inspiration.
FEMALE CAT-HERO-TYPESAnd lets not leave out the woman...
BLACK CAT-HERO-TYPES
BLACK STREET-CHARACTER-TYPESThere was also a trend of taking the blaxploitation archetype and making a hard-bitten street-wise superhero out of him.
